The dynamics of an unusual family composition are under a microscope showing the good, the bad, and the ugly. Children Phoebe, Tate and Taylor are up for adoption when their grandmother dies and their too young mother does not want them. Phoebe chooses her reading tutor, Ginger. Tate and Taylor are received by Tabitha and Perry. When infant sibling Violet is born so is her family with Elizabeth and John. These are open adoptions and the adopting families agree to become one extended family. There are cracks and fissures in the arrangement that widen when everyone comes together for a family vacation.
