The Fellowship of PuzzleMakers by Samuel Burr

A delightfully wonderful book filled with the story of friends and of the quest of a young man. I am so glad I took a chance on this book. Following the creation of the Fellowship of Puzzlemakers is a wonderful tale of distinct personalities blended to form a commune of different puzzle makers. They become the family to a baby boy left on their doorstep. As an adult, he is led by puzzles to try to learn of his parentage. His journey is a joy unto itself.

A very enjoyable read.

Hate to Fake It to You by Amanda Sellet

A often funny book with crazy occurrences and even nuttier characters. The hidden secrets could cause a traffic jam and just waiting for an accident. A tad dragging sometimes bogs the story down. Not too bad a read.

Sunset at Embthwaite Farm by Kate Hewitt

A mother returns to her former home when called back by her estranged daughter as her ex-husband is dying. Her relationship with her two daughters is deeply strained due to her departure twenty years ago, leaving no letters as to why. Her return is her chance to reconnect with her daughters but there is unsurmountable anger and resentment. As the three women navigate through their past, she meets a wonderful widower who challenges her to love again. It is a tense yet delightful story of love on many levels.

The Days I Loved You Most by Amy Neff

My eyes glistened with tears as I finished The Days I Loved You Most. The deep and endearing love of Joseph and Evelyn through the years will take hold and lead you through the remembrances of their life together. It is a love story for the ages encompassing all at

the joys, the fears, the awakenings, the sadness they experienced. Their decision to end their lives together due to Evelyn’s terminal illness creates chaos within the family and each adult child must come to their own conclusion about the decision. The book is lovely in all its parts, telling a beautiful yet heartbreaking story.

I highly recommend this novel.

Love starts curling around their hearts as fate continues to take charge.

Sworn to Lead by Charlee James

Denying strong chemistry, a Navy SEAL and a caretaker of his disabled brother fight the feelings.Lurking in her history is an abusive brother whom she is always fearful of his reappearance. Spicy, caring and tense, this book is the best.

Dominoes by Phoebe McIntosh

Layla is a mixed woman  twenty-nine days from her wedding to Andy, a white man, when her best friend sends her a documentary. It is about Jamaican slaves and the money slave owners received when the slaves were emancipated. The hitch to the story is that Layla’s relatives may have been slaves to Andy’s relatives.
Layla is torn as to how this information affects her marrying Andy and decides to travel to Jamaica to the land of her ancestors and dig deep into the slavery story.
I did not quite like the book until one-third in. I felt for Layla and the tremendous dilemma she felt. Her friend Sera was so unlikeable and awful to Layla. There is a true love of family and of the roots evident in the work.

A Northern Light in Provence by Elizabeth Birkelund

Isle Eklund lives in the cold and frozen, isolated Greenland. She translates books from French and Danish to English. She lives in an isolated cabin where she locks herself away with only daily visits to local cafe. It has been her refuge since her brother died. Isle’s one desire is to visit France, to the country of the language she loves.

Given the opportunity to translate a Provence troubadour  poet’s work, Isle bravely requests two weeks there to learn the nuances of his words.

In Provence amid vibrant colors and a more vibrant language, she comes alive, warmed by the sun and the poet.

This is the story of a lonely isolated woman seeing life from a truly colorful perspective. The words on the page will draw you into another world as seen through Isle’s eyes.

One Moment by Becky Hunter

A heartbreaking beautiful novel of a sisters-like friendship that tragically ends. One woman struggles with grief and a debilitating illness. The deceased woman drifts in and out of the present and past memories causing her to reflect on her life. Her running commentary on her friend’s life is insightful as she deals with her life and progression after death.

It Must Be True Then by Luci Adams

To be honest, it took me a while to get into this book. I almost decided to forget it but all of a sudden, I was enjoying the story. It is mainly due to Archie, Bailey, and Cara-all three down to earth characters. Daisy is irritating and self-absorbed in many instances. Her growth through the book pages is refreshing.

It definitely ended up being an enjoyable novel.

Strange Folk by Alli Dyer

Folklore and magic weave a tight thread through all of the Buck family. Some members embrace it for good, others for bad, and others ignore it or battle it.

In this story of a family caught in a web of deceit and evil magic, Lee returns home with her two children seeking peace and comfort. Instead, she and her family encounter malevolent and nefarious workings designed to destroy them all.

The ties of family shine through on the pages even though relationships are strained and the magic of lost bonds is tested. A very engrossing novel.

All We were Promised by Ashton Lattimore

A deep and informative look at the happenings in Philadelphia pre-emancipation and the imagined lives of three women. The story relates the tense atmosphere in a city where freed slaves dwell-some in poverty, others rising to create an elite class. The women are from three different classes-Nell is rich, Charlotte is a servant to her father, and Evie is a slave desiring to be free. The city explodes almost daily from tension as Nell and Charlotte strive to find a way to free Evie.

Sometimes long and drawn out, the story slows many times as it progresses.

Becoming Marlow Finn by Ellen Won Steil

This is a very eerie and creepy thriller with twists and turns, each one crazier than the next. Marlow’s character is spine-chilling. You never really grasp her entirely and so many interactions are disturbing-especially the effect she has on Isla. Not a book I will reread but certainly one I will definitely remember.

Marrying the Nanny by Dani Collins

A very endearing story of resolving conflict on many levels. Half-brothers with no relationship are literally forced to come to terms with the responsibility of their orphaned baby half-sister. The men cannot relate to an infant and depend on the direction from her nanny. The nanny is protective of the infant and brings the men to their knees in defense of the innocent child. I loved reading how the men grew in their relationship and in relation to the infant. Plus, there is romance in the offing.

Dark Irish Demon by Leigh Ann Edwards

This witch/demon fantasy is fabulous. The plot is exhilarating and very fast paced. Characters are well built and consistent as they travel through time portals, battle altered history and demons. I eagerly await the next book in the Witch and Demon series.

A Death in Chelsea by HL Marsay

The women of the WPV (Women’s Police Volunteers) are active again with a murder mystery. The suspects are many and coming out of the woodwork. Each has a motive for the murder. As death piles up, the hurry to solve the crime increases.

A captivating mystery with smart characters.

A Greek Island Escape by Kate Frost

The life of a young actress is on a collision course due to a horrible breakup and burnout from acting. A bequeath of a house on a Greek island provides the respite she desperately needs. Lovely descriptions of the island flow from the author’s pen as the story of family secrets and love unfolds.
